Critically endangered wader sighted at Jawai Dam

lapwigwader

On Sunday 10th January 2016 Surendra Chouhan sighted & photograph a critically endangered wader from lapwing family at Jawai Dam, Pali, Rajasthan.

Medium sized lapwing wader has black legs with small black beak.

This attractive medium-sized lapwing has longish black legs and a short black bill. Summer adults have grey backs and breast, dark belly and white undertail. The head has a striking pattern, with a black crown and eyestripe, the latter being bordered above and below with white. The upper neck is ochre.

Its longish black legs, white tail with a black terminal band and distinctive brown, white and grey wings make it almost unmistakable in flight. Length is 27–30 cm (11–12 in).Winter adults have a less distinct head pattern, slightly browner back and breast, and white belly. Young birds have a scaly back and only traces of the head pattern. This species breeds on open grassland in Russia and Kazakhstan. Three to four eggs are laid in a ground nest. These birds migrate south through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey, to key wintering sites in Israel, Syria, Eritrea, Sudan and north-west India. Birds winter occasionally in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Oman. It is a very rare vagrant in western and northern Europe, where this gregarious bird is usually found with northern lapwings.

It feeds in a similar way, picking insects and other small prey mainly from grassland or arable land.In 2004, BirdLife International categorized this bird as critically endangered, due to a very rapid population decline for poorly understood reasons. The main decline took place between 1960 and 1987, when the known population halved; it is some 20–25% of the 1930s population levels.

The current population was estimated to be between 600 and 1,800 mature birds in 2006,but is being revised to the upward end of that scale, possibly more, following the discovery of the species’ previously unknown main wintering grounds in Syria, where 1500 birds of all ages were encountered.Additionally, in October 2007, a superflock of approximately 3,200 sociable lapwings were discovered in Turkey, according to Guven Eken, director of the Turkish Nature Association. The current IUCN classification is CR A3bc—meaning that the population is expected to decline in the next decade or so by 80%, but based on theoretical considerations and the known habitat destruction rather than direct observation of the birds. Thus, the new discoveries might mean that as more data becomes available, the species could be downlisted to Endangered.

The poem titled “The World’s Rainbow” describing the rich Indian culture and heritage. Nazneen dedicated this poem on the occasion of Republic Day.

-The World‘s Rainbow-

India is a rainbow in the world’s sky; Spreading its colors so vivid so high.

Its nation full of cultural diversity; Still, we live in peace and serenity.

The Himalayas are our guards, Taj Mahal our pride; Forts, lakes, rivers and deserts are found the country wide.

Eid, Diwali, Christmas, Onam, together we all celebrate; It’s this dwelling of different faith that makes our country so great.

We speak Hindi, English, Tamil, Marathi, or any tongue we wish; Still we happily end up eating Dosa with a Punjabi dish.

It’s the land of Gandhi – a man we adore; It’s the land of Nehru,Patel,Tilak,Bose and many more.

Raman, Kalaam, and Bhabha, each one is a gem; Who brought to the country glory and fame.

Tagore,Tulsi,Kabir and Ghalib are the country’s poetic chord; Demonstrating the fact that pen is no less than a sword.

Sachin,Sania and Sushil are our sporting arm; They bring to the country both thrill and charm.

Indian cinema is full of talent and art; Where Rajini,Bachchans and Khans rules the heart.

Our Army, Navy and Air force are our true heroes; Who have pledged to save us from all our foes.

We are no less in technology and space; With ISRO launching satellites and working with full pace.

From agriculture, livestock to industrialization; We have given so much to Global civilization.

And now together we vow to eradicate corruption; So on path of our progress we encounter no disruption.

As a nation, we will mature and grow; Ensuring we remain the World’s Rainbow.

We are the largest democracy with so much value at hand; We love our motherland, we love our motherland.

Animal Aid Unlimited, an NGO that provides emergency rescue services for stray animals in Udaipur, uploaded an amazing video on how they rescued a seriously injured street dog named “Kalu”.

The dog was found in a hole near a construction site and his face had literally been eaten up by maggots after he had apparently crawled into a hole to die. Quoting the agency – “His face looked as if a bomb had exploded in his forehead. There was a gaping hole in his face and was infested with maggots that were literally eating him alive”.

When he was first brought to Animal Aid, it was decided to euthanize him. However, looking at his will power, the agency decided to try out a treatment. A powder was poured over his wound to kill the maggots. Thereafter, the dead maggots were removed and wound cleaned. After 3 months of daily cleaning of wound, Kalu is miraculously healed and wound clean.

While it is gory for a lot of us to view the video or even read this, the agency that undertook this activity deserves a definite salute. Well done the members of Animal Aid!
